Bath Information: The City of Bath Immerses Visitors in History. The city of Bath, located in southwest England, is immensely popular with tourists from all over the world. Even before the Romans arrived, the site of modern day Bath was inhabited by Iron Age Britons. The Romans founded a city on the site which eventually became known as Aquae Sulis. The natural hot springs, the only such springs in England, attracted visitors from all over the Roman Empire. Bath continued to be important into the Middle Ages. For example, King Edgar of England was crowned in Bath Abbey in 973. Over the years, Bath’s population continued to increase, and by 1800 it was one of the largest cities in England. Today, however, Bath is a small town compared to other large cities in England.

The most famous tourist site in Bath is undoubtedly the original Roman baths. These were built around a hot spring that emits large quantities of hot water every day. The original architecture is well-preserved and very striking. Bath Abbey is another popular tourist destination. Various churches have occupied the site since the Roman period, but construction on the current church began in 1499. The abbey is a spectacular example of late Gothic architecture. Its vast stretches of stained glass and intricate stonework never fail to impress visitors. The Royal Crescent, a distinctly shaped building consisting of many houses sharing a single facade, is another must-see attraction. Bath is also home to the renowned University of Bath. As there are many tourists in Bath, minibus hire service, coach hire service and taxis are all readily available.
